Younger Looking Skin Tips
One of the most popular and sought after skin care tips is how to keep one’s face looking young. On this page, we are not only going to discuss ways to get younger looking skin and the important anti-aging ingredients to look for in facial creams and lotions, but also what it is that actually makes our complexion look young.
You have probably heard people talk about collagen. But what is it and why is it so significant?
Collagen is one of the most important things, which keeps the complexion looking youthful. It is actually a protein that is found in the skin and helps to keep it plump and soft. However, as we get older the collagen tends to breakdown and our bodies don’t produce as much of it to replace what we are losing. Therefore as we lose the collagen, wrinkles and sagging begin to appear.
So, the real question is, is there any way to stop or at least slow down the breakdown of collagen?
Avoid the Sun
- Pretty much any article that you read on facial care will say this same thing and that’s because the sun can cause a lot of damage. But this damage can be prevented.
- Everyday wear at least SPF 30. If you know that you are going to be out in the sun, wear sunscreen and a protective hat or visor.
- Also, here is a little secret that many people don’t know, wear sunglasses! Not only do sunglasses protect your eyes from the harmful UVA and UVB rays, but they will also protect the very delicate area underneath your eyes, which is especially prone to sun damage.
Anti-Aging Ingredients: Retinols, Retinoids and Peptides
These three ingredients help to restore collagen, or counteract the effects of less collagen. They are usually found in many anti-aging products, which are on the market today.
Retinoids and Retinol
- These two ingredients come from Vitamin A and are believed to be small enough to be able to penetrate and help restore collagen, thereby minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.
- Retinol is the natural, gentle form, while Retin-A is the much stronger, chemically enhanced form.
- Retinol is found in many over-the-counter products, and while considered effective is not as strong as products with tretinoin.
- Tretinoin is found in stronger products like Retin-A and Renova, which usually have to be prescribed by a doctor/dermatologist.
Peptides
- When collagen breaks down, it forms amino acids, called peptides. When the skin senses new peptides, it tries to repair this damage by making new collagen, to replace that which has broken down. However, we can speed up nature’s process, by using creams, which contain peptides.
- These peptide creams fool the skin into thinking that it has been damaged and to make new collagen.
- If you have a very sensitive complexion, you may wish to try peptides, since they are gentler.
- The problem with peptides is that they are thought to not be as effective as Retinol.
