Lipstick Makeup: How To Choose Lipstick
The iconic and flawless red, or soft, baby-doll pink lips; whichever you choose, lipstick makes a big statement. It is an integral part of the makeup process and can be used in conjunction with our other makeup techniques. However, standing in front of the cosmetics counter, it can be a daunt task finding the best one, as you are confronted with many different types and shades. So, how do you choose? And which one is going to be perfect for you?
Below we will give you some pointers and suggestions about the different types of lipstick and when are the best times to use them.
Matte Lipstick
This is a very versatile choice. In bright or rich colors, they are for the bold, since it makes a strong statement. However in softer, more muted color, they can also work for daytime or nighttime. The reason that this type makes such a strong statement is that it contains less oils and conditioners and more pigment, which causes a thicker and brighter application of color. However, for nights out and fancy parties, where you want to make a grand statement, this type can be a great way to go. But remember, if you choose Matte lipstick in red, keep the rest of your makeup to a minimum, so you don’t end up with the dreaded “clown” effect. To use in the daytime, make sure to tone down the color, applying just a little or using a softer color.
Sheer Lipstick
This is the kind that you drop in your purse for use at any time, as they will give your lips a little touch of color and softness. Depending on the color and amount applied, Sheer lipstick can be used during the day or at night. Also they provide a glossy finish, but with more color than a lip-gloss. Since this type include lots of moisturizing ingredients, they can easily rub off and therefore need to be reapplied. But it is a great choice for people whose lips tend to be dry, or which tend to dry out quickly. A great choice if you are looking for a more natural look and especially if keeping your lips soft and moisturized is important.
Cream Lipstick
Another good choice for day or night is Cream lipstick. These have a silicone base, while others have a wax base, both of which help to seal moisture into your lips, to keep them from drying out too quickly. One big advantage is that these tend to last longer than the sheer types, and they boast a little richer color. They may not be as long lasting as the matte ones. They do not have a glossy finish, but instead are opaque, yet not as much so as the matte type.
Shimmer Lipstick
Looking for another statement-making choice? Then you may want to try Shimmer lipstick. This one is better for nighttime use, since it can be too dramatic for the daytime. What gives this variety its characteristic quality is that one of the ingredients is usually silica, mica or synthetic pearl. This is a great look for festive parties or events, since it will give your lips a frosty effect, adding some extra glamour to your look. Sometimes, this type can feel heavy or even dry out your lips, so before applying it, you may want to apply some moisturizing lip balm or Vaseline to add extra moisture to your lips. This type is also sometimes called Frost or Pearly.
